im having a hard time finding adjustable vents at a reasonable price. only thing i could find was at cagesbydesign and they want 10 bucks a piece which i
think is a little pricey for 2 pieces of plastic. might make my own. any other sites to find material?
and why does everyone complain about heat panel prices.... helix cost more or am i missing something? 120 bucks w/o shipping is the cheepest ive seen. Do you guys really have 1 helix for each cage? i see why rheostats are so tempting now.

All of the vents I have seen in homemade enclosures to date are louvered but not adjustable. If you decide to go this route try www.hardwareandtools.com or www.hardwarestore.com and search for Maurice Franklin Round Plastic Screen Louver. |

I noticed recently that Greg updated his web site with a link to the company that he gets his vents from: http://www.courterco.com/ (From: http://www.finegtps.com/cageplans.htm)
I use non-adjustable round plastic vents that I can get at Home Depot. I haven't found any adjustable vents around here that I thought would work. As for the heat panels, I have both Helix and ProProducts and I much prefer the ProProducts. I like the indicator light on the ProProducts and the fact that it doesn't have a rim around it for the snakes to crawl on. Contact Bob Pound with ProProducts and tell him what you have in mind for a cage (be specific about venting, size, ambient room temps, etc) and he'll recommend the correct size panel. Most people use 40W and should be less than $90 shipped. I really like Spyder Robotic's Herpstat for a thermostat: www.spyderrobotics.com Good luck! |

I use non adjustable vents from home depot too. I use desert heat panels in each of my cages. They are available from Big Apple Pet supply and work great. I
have a pro panel as well. The desert heat are cheaper, work just as well and if they don't last 20 years...it doesn't matter as I can afford 2 backup
panels for what one pro panel costs me.

I don't like sliders, either. Go with at least 1/4" Polycarbonate. You can mill it with regular power tools or hand tools and screw hinges
, etc. right to it. Much lighter and easier to hang than glass. Drawback = they can scratch if not careful when cleaning. My doors in the pictures
are not scratched... just a little dirty. Just built 6 more enclosures for a total of 12. Each have been built to accept a divider which turns my
12, potentially, into 24 cages.
Experimented with lots of materials. Here are a few pics to see what I mean. Chrome hardware adds a touch of class. Cheap plastic hardware looks cheap. Chrome is pricey, though. Best of luck! Bob

did you get those door locks at a hardware store? think i might use something like that. alrite, next question, how do you guys have your lighting setup, like what do you have inbetween the animal and the light? screen mesh, glass, something else? |

another question is pine wood toxic in anyway to chondros?
i know there certain types of wood that are (or so i've been told), i don't remember which my plan is to make the enclosure out of mdf, but the door frame to hold the glass i think would be better if i used a stronger wood (don't need any broken glass) and i was thinking pine for cost/strength reasons. |

You can probably use that, but you're going to have to finish the wood anyway and as long as it's outside the cage, it shouldn't be a problem. I
sealed everything else. The only benefits I find to sliding doors is when I have an aggressive chondro sitting by one door, I can open the other without
getting a face removed.

I just use the under the cabinet lights directly inside the cage. They just secure to the the top of the cage using screws and slot in place. I haven't had a problem even with males who wander around and LOVE to screw up their nice, neat cages. I did try special water resistant aquarium lights and I'll never do that again. They sit in place with plastic clamps which my snakes love to pull the light out of. If the bulb isn't sitting securely in the end caps, it will spark and sizzle - NOT something I'm going to risk ever again. The cheap under cabinet lights have worked great. |

Alrite, started putting this thing together. I tired the whole mdf and contact paper.... i don't really like the contact paper, im gonna have to find
something else when i build my next one.
I tired to get ahold of pro-products, but no answer so i emailed them. i need the heat panel cuz it dictates where the light will be. the herpstat was sent back and the fuse was blown i guess, so they replaced it. they paid for the shipping and everything, i was impressed with spyder robotics support. i think i should get it tommorow (if they ship on saturday) if not monday. i need the herpstat so, i know how big to make my little control panel i wanna make on top of the cage. im gonna order the shocks for my door tommorow (im experimenting). got my vents, going with 4x 4 inch round louver vents and if thats too much ventilation i can always cover em. yea so this projects starting to come together.

Looking good. Dion is excellent at Herpstat. He takes great care of his customers. I used cheap aquarium lights in my cages. They are at the front door in the
ceiling and no problems with anybody getting burned. They don't crawl around until the lights go out. The bulbs are the cheap 15 watt bulbs that you can
buy in a 2 pack at the petstore. They seem to do alright although Brutus seems to delight in unscrewing them by climbing on them after dark. Just enough to
make them go out. I have to periodically screw the bulb back in. You should be able to use the measurements of the propanel and just figure where it's
going to be in the cage. The Desert Heat panels are just flat heat tape basically and mount pretty flush. I use a piece of that metallic insulation like you
see for car windshield heat panels behind the heat panel to redirect all the heat back into the cage.

well got alot done today, i just gotta get my heat panel and make my perches and i think im done. i gave up on trying to make this cage visually appealing, was kind disappointed how the contact paper turned out so im just putting it together. just trying to get it animal ready. but on the upside, i got my door shocks to work. easy open, easy close. excuse the bad pics.

I don't know why you couldn't spray paint the hinges and brackets with black paint to clean up the look. Otherwise it's pretty cool.
