Eggs denting in..... |

So my eggs for the most part are doing great, all but a few that I am worried about. The ones that are worrying me are the ones that are on top of other eggs
in the clump. They seem to not be filling out(swelling up) like the others that are in the perlite. The very top few even seem to be sinking in. I mentioned
this on a local forum and some mentioned using damp paper towels to place over these eggs to help them get the proper moisture. Is this a safe idea? I
don't feel I can separate them from the others, so what are my options? The eggs are in a nest box with approximately 1" damp vermiculite covered with
another 1" perlite. They are a constant 88 degrees which will be dropped slowly the last week(1/5/1) They are due to hatch on the 26th/27th of this month.
Any help would be great! Mike C

Do NOT put anything damp directly over the eggs. Direct contact with moisture will cause major problems! You're in the final stretch with these eggs so
you should expect to see denting in the last 20 days or so before they hatch. You'll be surprised at how dented they will become in the last few days
before hatching. Make sure you're giving them good ventilation during this time.
I wasn't clear on this when I started my first incubation but to get a day 49/50 hatch you needed to up your temps slowly over the last two days of the first week to reach your 5 week 88-89F temps, and then two days before your last week start to slowly drop your temps down for the final week of 85-86F. In other words, start cooling down your temps slowly about 48 hrs prior to your last week so that your entire final 7 days are at the 85-86F temps. Does that make sense? If you didn't do this, your incubation time may vary from the 49/50 hatch but that's no big deal. p.s. Post some pics so we can see them! |

A few look worse than I thought originally. Don't know what to do at this point as the humidity seems fine.

A couple of those do look a little too dented. I don't have any experience with the substrate method of incubation since I've gone no-substrate both
times. 1) Your incubator isn't saturated and is pulling moisture from your egg boxes and your egg boxes may not be humid enough. I'm not sure I know
what your incubator set up is like. Do you have open containers of water to saturate the air inside the incubator? 2) Switch the cluster of badly dented
eggs onto straight, damp vermiculite. I don't know how perlite works at all for chondro eggs. It may be too dry. Do you know how to set up an egg box
with vermiculite? This should rehydrate them.

Kime, I went ahead and switched them over to pure vermiculite. I will let you know how they do and will give you an update real soon.
Thanks for the quick responses. BTW, where is everyone now? Is there a different forum I am unaware of nowadays? This board seems to be real dead lately.

They should plump up pretty quickly on the damp vermiculite. Are they looking better today? I sure hope so! Unfortunately, this forum has been pretty dead since chondroweb.com isn't working, both chondroforum.com & chondroweb.com domain names don't
point here anymore, and since Greg Maxwell doesn't participate here as often since turning over the reins. It's a combination of things of things that
have caused this place to get very quiet. I really miss the busy days! I have been trying for years now to get control over the server space for chondroweb
and have the domain names transfered to me. No luck there so far...and Greg M has been helping me a lot with this.
