Sheesh... without the chondro, it is nothing?




For those of you who haven't met her, this is Minnie.

My last camera was the Sony DSCF828, which had Program, Manual, Aperture and Shutter modes, so I got used to "real" (or shall we say, "manual") photography on that. Pretty much the entire time I had it I was on Manual, so the settings I have down in my brain.

What's giving me the most trouble is what you said, the nuances of the camera. F/5, 1/100, ISO100, Daylight, is severly different between the two. What I thought I knew, is now different.

The other HUGE learning curve for me is not having an estimated photo LCD viewfinder. Apparently (and someone let me know if any of the DSLRs do this), on a DSLR, there's no such thing as an LCD preview before you take the shot. You have to look thru the eyepiece itself, which in situations where you are taking a flash, or leaving the shutter open longer, is not what your picture is going to look like. The preview on the Sony, under most circumstances, adjusted fairly properly on the LCD to show you what your picture was going to look like. The EOS 20D (I finally found it in the manual) states that the LCD cannot be used to preview your shot before it's taken.

One day in, and I'm getting used to putting my eye in the camera, but that's really kind of a bummer. The flip side of that is for focusing, you're seeing what the lens sees, and the resolution looking thru the lens is infinitely better than any viewfinder. That part I like.

I am also noticing that the picture quality itself is worlds beyond the Sony. ISO 200 is as clean as my ISO 64 on the Sony. And getting those couple of stops up is quite liberating.

I'm just hoping that we have one more sunny day before the dirge of winter... it's been cloudy the past two, which is really crampin my style. Soon we'll not only have the yellow and red or Autumn to shoot, but in my case, hopefully the yellow and red of teeny tiny chondros.
