EzBoard, the host service for the ChondroForums, uses a set of codes called "EzCodes" to make adding images to your posts easy. EzCodes replace the more difficult HTML codes that are commonly used on the web.

To include your photo image in a post, it must first be uploaded to a server. This means that the image must be published to the web, whether it be a personal web site, or one of the commercial image-hosting sites available. Images can not be included in a forum post simply because you have them on your computer hard drive.

Once your image is published, it will have a "path" assigned to it. Part of the path will be given by your hosting service, and the actual name of the image will be designated by you when you save it. This is the address a computer uses to find your image. An example might be:

www.mypage.com/myimages/chondro1.jpg

This imaginary example shows your web site address (www.mypage.com), the folder your images are stored in (myimages), and the specific image you wish to display (chondro1.jpg). Note: Your actual path will be different, based on where your images are published.

To find the actual path of your specific image once it is uploaded to the web:

1. Open it in your browser, such as Internet Explorer

2. Right click on it and go to "Properties" in the pop up menu

3. Copy the path that shows there using the "copy" command from your browser tool bar. The path will usually begin with http://www. and will be followed by your host site and image file name, ending in .jpg

To use EzCodes to include your image in a post:

1. Make sure that the ezCodes button is activated in the "Formatting" bar above the window where you type in the text for your posts.

2. From the vertical row of tool buttons on the left of the text window, click "image."

3. In the image pop up box that appears, paste the path of your image that you obtained in step 3 in "how to find your image path" above.

4. Click ok. The image path will now appear in the text box. If you have selected the correct image path from your host site that allows links, the image will appear in your post once it is published.

5. When you are ready to add your post to the Forum, click "Preview" to make sure the image appears. While checking the image in preview mode, click "refresh" on your browser's tool bar to make sure the image is "live" and not just being seen in your pc's cache file.

6. When the image appears correctly in the preview window after being refreshed, you are good to go! If a broken image link appears, chances are good that the problem is an error in your path. Even one wrong letter or space will result in a broken image icon. Go back and repair the link using the "edit post " button. Please do not publish broken image links or make "test posts." Use the preview tool to get it right before publishing. You can preview and edit your posts as many times as needed to make them right before publishing them on the Forums.

Avoiding Common Problems

1/ You can use Ezcodes to include active links in your post, as well as inserting photos. However, do not confuse an image path with a link path when attempting to post photos. Some image hosting services will assign a path to your individual images that is actually a link to their site, along with the address to your image. If you use the EzCode tool for posting an image, but paste in the path for a link, you will not see your image. You can find the image path for most images by right-clicking on the image, clicking "Properties" from the drop down list, and then copying the image path found there.

2/ Image paths must be typed in exactly the way the file name is published to your host server. If even one character or space is wrong, including switching upper or lower case letters, the image path will be broken. Check your image path carefully, and remember to preview your post to verify you have done it correctly. Note: A common error is typing "http://" at the beginning of your image path twice.

3/ Image files end with the extension ".jpg". If your image doesn't show up, make sure the file name of your image ends with ".jpg". NOTE: ".dll" and other file extensions won't work.

4/ Make sure the HTML box is not checked when making your post. If this box is checked, Ezcodes won't work. You can automatically disable HTML for all your posts in your personal preferences.

5/ Many free hosting services do not allow you to link to your images from other sites, such as the ChondroForum. Please do not attempt to include links to images hosted by free sites that do not support such linking.

Using EzCodes for other forum features

You can use Ezcodes in your posts to insert images, active links (such as to a web site), bold or italics type, and other text changes. Please see the link "Using ezPost" located underneath the tool menu (to the left of the text box) for a list of codes you can use to make your posts more interesting. The same principles apply to using all the Ezcodes, that we have outlined here for posting images.
