It is the goal and policy of the ChondroForums moderation team to implement moderation tools as infrequently as possible, and only when we as a team feel they are needed to maintain the integrity, quality, or to enforce the rules of use.

One of these tools is the thread lock, which closes the thread from any further posting. Closed threads are identified with a small padlock icon displayed to the left of the thread title.

Possible reasons for the moderation team deciding to close a thread might include, but are not limited to:

1/ The thread going in a direction that violates the terms of use or mission statement, but still contains useful information that others might benefit from in the future use of the archives.

2/ The thread starts or heads in a direction with may bring legal complications on the administrators.

3/ The thread continues to propagate false or bad information, despite the efforts of the moderators and others to correct the problem.

4/ Users continuing to post replies in a thread after a moderator asks that the discussion of the particular issue be concluded. Moderators may ask that a topic be concluded due to any of reasons listed above, but are attempting to get voluntary cooperation from users rather than using the lock tool up front. If the request from the moderator is not honored, the thread will be closed.

Threads are not closed:

1/ To stifle discussion, or...

2/ Impose the perspectives or opinions of the moderators over those of others, unless...

either of these directly involves the reasons stated above in # 1-4

We realize that closing threads is not a popular decision with some users. However, EzBoard provides moderators with the tool for a good reason, and while we use it very sparingly and only when we feel we must, it is with a clear conscience when we do. The high quality of this forum, and the professional tone and friendly atmosphere we strive to maintain, sometimes depends on the moderation team having the ability to end a discussion.

Moderation decisions are made carefully, and in the best interests of the majority of users, and are not an appropriate topic for forum discussion. Please address any comments you may have about any moderation decision to an administrator privately, via Email. The administrators are always willing to discuss why a particular decision was made.
