Lighting/Heating - New to Chrondro need some advice.

I'm planning on a planted viv but to be honest I'm not sure about lighting. I'm going to setup a 45cx45x45 Exo-terra. I'm planning on using a heat mat on a thermostat mounted on the inside celing of the viv to provide day/night heat. I was also planning on using www.exo-terra.com/EN/prod...lbs_i.html for lighting for the plants. Would this bulb be ok for plants and the Chondro? Any advice from others with planted setups would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Posts: 6 (03/05/07 15:46:09) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Hello jilazy, I too im currently using a 60cx45x45 Exo-terra viv, regarding your heating method you would be much better off using a heat plate rather then a heat mat as i dont think it would offer the heat you would require to Adequately heat this size viv, heat mats are generally used as a bottom heat source also you will require a thermostat, i have placed a couple of pics to give you a rough idea on how you could set your viv up www.vans4me.co.uk/GTP2.htm i have since placed the heat source width ways as to allow my boy to thermoregulate better, www.vans4me.co.uk/GTP3.htm my lighting is a 6 inch strip light running a 7500k bulb i also are currently keeping some live plants in the cage and the lighting seems adequate at the moment! also the lids to the Exo-terra viv need some modification as the current mesh lids are useless for keeping in heat + humidity my lids have been modified using mdf board, powder coated with 3 small vents added which i can adjust the ventilation as needed. I did see your setup a week or so ago but wondered about thermoregulation length wise.. but as you mentioned you've turned your lid around. Where would be the best place to aquire a heat plate from? Where did you get your lid from or what supplies did you use to make it? Seems like a great lid. I HATE having cables and lights hung over the top of the Viv I prefer everything to be self contained.. but understand that isn't always possible. Some more photos of your lid would be awesome. Thanks again.

Posts: 6 (03/07/07 08:02:32) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Hello jilazy Im over in the UK so as im not sure were you are based i cant specify excactly were you can gain a heat plate only to say that most herp suppliers will carry these in stock or can be purchased online i know the one most use in the states is the Pro Heat Panels, Ive been meaning to more detailed info on the lid but due to work ive had very little time but i promise i will before the weekend.

I've found the heat plates. www.livefoods.co.uk/produ...cts_id=151 The lid I'm pretty sure I can work out.. would just be nice to see yours and how you've worked it. Only other thing I need to do some research on is lighting. So many diffrent types of bulbs and sizes and shapes and powers and lightoutputs... Never put lighting in for plants before. When you said 7500k.. was the k for Kelvin by any chance? Thanks for your replys,

Posts: 69 (03/07/07 10:06:55) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Hi ... just to stick my oar in.... exoterra are just launching new hoods for their glass vivs. You can install 2% UV bulbs into these which show off colours of the snakes really well. You can also use infra red heat bulbs in these connected to a dimmer stat. Just an idea. I personally like the reptile radiator heat pannels best but the new hoods look good and combine heating and lighting. Stephen

I was going to use a heat plate combined with a Repti Glo 2.0 Compact (or the normal version) Full Spectrum Terrarium Lamp Ideal spectrum for all reptiles & amphibians Stimulates plant growth High visual light output Stimulates appetite, activity and reproductive behaviour through UVA radiation High Colour Rendering Index of 98 (CRI) - 6700 K Recommended in combination with Repti Glo 5.0 or Repti Glo 10.0, depending on the reptiles requirements Anyone with any experience with plants able to let me know if this would be any good? The Viv is going to be situated in a well lit room and I plan to provide quite a dense foliage within the Viv to provide privacy for the little Chrondro. Thanks again for the input guys
