Obviously during breeding attempts this would be the case. My question is, does anybody house a male and female adult "couple" together throughout the year, and then just begin cycling when you want to induce breeding behavior? I'm asking because I currently have an adult Maxwell cage that is empty, and I'd like to try my hand at breeding. So, I'm wondering if I could house a male and female in it together until the time at which they would be settled and ready to begin being cycled. Thanks for the advice, David

Chondros are very competitive when it comes to food. Even if they think its feeding time they may start to go at each other. You may end up with injured Chondros and a bloody hand in the process. Been there, done that.

I currently have 2- 18 month old females housed together(These were also raised together by previous owner) and it is sometimes a pain, especially during feeding. They have such a strong feeding response, they will both go after the same mouse, which makes it tricky to feed. Obviously this is not safe, so this weekend they should both have their own cages. I think I speak for the majority when I say keep them seperate. it's better safe than sorry. Mike

I know of one breeder that housed a pair together ONLY FOR BREEDING, not year round, and had the female constrict the male due to a feed response. 2. you will never know who is defecating and shedding for your records 3. animals do get stressed from being housed with other animals, in the wild chondros are solitary. 4. Maybe he can weigh in on how that worked out? As a general rule though, i think the consensus is against it. -Jay
