how do you expert types tell the differance between a wild caught and captive born chondro?....I''ve read here and other sites that its easy to tell.............so fill me in please.......and thatnk you

Wouldnt know how to tell the difference other than wild caught/farmed often have obvious scars which you would not get from captive bred.
In my experience stick to captive bred where you can check the source. If you are in the US or Canada there are plenty of great breeders to buy from and get bona fide CB. There are plenty of cheaper captive farmed animals around and you have no way of knowing their background. Here in the UK I suspect many of the captive farmed snakes are in fact wild caught and are invariably trouble....need loads of vet care, cost a fortune and fall of their perch! Do you research and buy from a local breeder! |

CB is the way to go. There are plenty of breeders out there that sells GTPs, even cheap, no scratch that (there is no such thing as cheap chondros)... affordable ones. Besides, the CBs are usually better looking, and healthier. I think if you want to know for sure, deal with breeders, face to face if possible. Get to know them and their reputation before the actual purchase.
OT My white lipped python was WC, and was near death when it was brought in. He was my second snake so I didn't know better. But the amount of money I spent on vet and care, I could have bought one or two CB designer chondros. But I don't really regret it cause he is a rare python but the money... ouch, the money....... CB is the way to go, PERIOD. ChondroHead

three recent purchases of "captive bred indonesian" resulted in two dead and the third on long term vet care!!!!
cost from vet $900+ ad that to the cost of the snakes and add the disapointment + heartache and so on.............yes you get the picture. captive bred US or Canada or UK or Europe is the way to go |

You can sometimes tell by looking at older chondros whether they are FB or CBB. The best way to find out is ask the seller and be an informed buyer. In pictures, look for incorrect setups, old sheds or feces/urates laying about, and a lack of overall chondro knowledge or information on the seller's part. They should at least know something about its background, namely parents and hatch date. If they don't have that information, then it's up to you to decide whether to trust them. Most of the "localities" you see advertised on KS are FB imports.
That said, there are always people out there who lie, but appear believable. So, always have your new snakes vet checked and quarantine for at least 90 days. |

Wild caught chondropythons are illegally poached-for the most part.
I thought one island was open for export but I am not certain. Can't tell you the exact Indonesian law. I have heard only farmed animals are legal tender. I have read that persons try to pretend animals are farmed over there to sell poached critters. Natives are paid cents to grab the animals-usually lashed to a stick-or not. The WC that come in looking really bad may have been lashed to a stick. I have seen pics of them wedged between bamboo? So, a WC animal was illegally taken from the wild. It will have a full load of endo and possiibly ectoparasites that become pathenogenic in captivity. Not all parasites are treatable. Many vets do not have the experience to deal with the parasites wild green trees have. Not all parasites are able to even be detected. At least two we can get. One has no cure for the snakes and it likes to tunnel in us. Then there are viruses. Unknown to science. No tests to detect them. Sometimes you get lucky and get a wild critter that doesn't seem to mind being yanked out of the papuan rainforest. Sometimes you get one that survived while the others that were captured died before they even reached the American pet trade. Just to die in somebodies house due to lack of knowledge or parasties that became pathenogenic in a captive situation. Sometimes they have a virus that wipes your collection out. What I have personally experienced: pentastomids, subcutaneous worms-unidentified, haemogregarians-a blood parasite, unidentified tapeworms, hepatic worms, roundworms, strongyle, hookworms, coccidia, protazoans, amoeba? Don't forget mites and mouthrot that sets in. Plus R.I. To end this long post: WC vs. CB. Why support illegal poaching of green tree pythons. Buy CBB animals from a breeder in the U.S.A. If you must, buy farmed that are from Bushmaster. But be prepared to have them checked for parasites mutliple times. |

oops, didn't really answer the question. I just get so happy to talk about parasites and why not to support WC sales of green trees.
How to tell was already answered. Not much to add to what is above. Sometimes there are markings as was mentioned-scars. The allometry of the animal sometimes is an indicator-does it have a large head to body ratio? Not always true but a good one. Facial scarring-yellow regions from regrown scales. Really just experience gives one that ability to discern. Does this answer the question? |

Does anyone have any proof the farmed indonesian GTP's are farmed or are they the result of garvid females being caught in the wild etc? The large number of juvenille and adult farmed GTP's which have been offered in the UK and Europe appear to me to be wild caught and licensed as farmed! Unless a supplier can prove otherwise I'll alway think indonesian stock is wild and illegal.....I konw we have all seen photo's of outdoor vivs from indonesia but what does that prove? |
