I picked up an Aru male this summer, when I got him he was 3 years old and weighed 490g, he's a little over 650g. I put him in with a female Aru that is 1140g, when I check this morning she had shedded and the male was attempting to do his thing, I'll try and get a picture tonight show you, so if that helps you I'd say over 2 years old and over 500g.

And females should be over 1000gr.What would happen if you breed a female smaller than that?

I've breed a Sorong female that was 910g, when cooling was over and I put her with a male, she laid 22 eggs and incubated them herself, she was fine, and come to think of I don't think she ever got over a 1000g, except for when she was done eating. So I would say as long as she's well over 900g, healthly and alert, I'd give it a shot.

I have heard people say males can breed as young as 18 month, but females atleast 3 yrs plus 1000g

Females don't necessarlily have to be 1000 grams. It's just a safe rule of thumb. Think about it, in the wild the males don't trun the female down
bcause they're not quite 1000 grams yet. Some animals are ready sooner than others and I tend to feel like "nature knows best" with these animals
more so than we do.

Male's vary greatly in size and I'm more interested in age. Smaller males that don't eat a whole lot have the reputation of being the better
breeders but there are always exceptions. I've heard of 2.5 yr old males attempting to breed but mine don't seem to have the drive until around 3 or
4.

Usually, males are ready to breed at 3 years old and we're not so worried about their weight. If you've cycled your pair and there is no interest shown, it could be that the female isn't ready or that your male isn't interested in her. Not all pairs are good matches. You might have to try several males before the female is receptive. How old are they? Have your males shown any interest in breeding by being off food and restlessly searching around their cages at night? |
