Starting to get frustrated.

Its very tough to get him to take anything latley (past 4 months) now lately I have tried to feed him he takes it and eats half of it and then backs off of it.. I have never seen a snake do this before. I know that males go off feed but his eating habitats are on and off. Its very strange. I feed him at night with almost no light. Temps are 88 basking and 80 on the cool side.The rat hoppers are set near a heat lamp so they heat up a little to simulate live prey. If they are at room temp he wont even think about eating. I think its because I made the mistake of feeding him a live mouse a long long time ago. Since then he hates frozen.. The only reason I fed him live is because thats all I had at the time and I hate killing them my self.

Posts: 5 (03/15/08 13:42:24) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	That does sound strange, what works for me when i feed mine is I take a bowl of water and put it in the microwave for around 1-2 min just so the water i warm not boiling, and then i put the frozen rats in it . For some reason mine doint like eating prey that is not 105F (I check with an inferred to make sure its not too warm) . Maby your male is gong into "off feeding". Maby not.... I know that when i dont warm up the frozen rats (to their likeing) mine will take it and then drop it a few seconds later... Hope this helps... good luck :) Mike

I noticed with my female lately that she dislikes white rats. I dont know why, it just seemed to be a change of preferrence as she never gave me any fuss in her first few years, but now, she usually only goes for dark rats. I guess that doesnt really help much if he is actually striking it though. All I can suggest is maybe just try something smaller if for any reason just to give him less time to change his mind while getting it down. good luck, let us know if it works out, im curious.

He went off feed during the summer and I didnt freak out or anything. But he has not ate since Jan 8th. On three different occasions he has ate it half way and then backed off. I will try again in a few days. I will keep you posted. Thanks for the replies.

With that being said though, i still dont think the snake would even go so far as to try to eat. I know you said you feed lights out, do you ever get caught distracting him? Ive never had mine drop theirs but they do get a little freaked out sometimes if I move too much while they feel vulnerable. Maybe try draping a blanket over the cage (even in the dark) just to help him feel a little more secure. My snakes are pretty laid back, I would think a jumpier one may be more prone to dropping prey if startled so maybe that will help.

My amazon babies won't take a mouse unless it's super hot. I find better feeding responses with super hot food items in the chondros too. I would try lowering your warm side down to around 82-84. I've gotten much better feeding responses and had more active snakes since dropping the temperatures a bit. After seeing the thermal studies done and how warm the snakes get with the temps set to 86 I dropped them. I rather enjoy my males fasting periods, cages need to be cleaned less frequently. I have a ten year old male that on a good year will eat a dozen or so times. It can be frustrating when snakes do not eat on "our" schedule. I wouldn't continue to stress your animal with repeated feeding attempts....and relax. Buddy B
