Posts: 470 (02/28/07 10:46:40) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Tags : None Yea.. the night before, I was watchin tv, and all of a sudden I hear someone coughing... (it seriously sounded like a person coughing) At the second cough I got up and tried to find the source. It was one of my chondros. She coughed about a dozen times. Each cough, she took in what looked like a deep inhale and then just coughed with a gurgling sound as if she had phlem. With her mouth opened. I opened her mouth afterwards and didn't really see anything, and there wasn't anything in the enclosure either.... I brought her to the vet the next day and the usual vet wasn't there. Another vet saw her, but she didn't really look confident about my chondro and really didn't do that much of a checkup. She noticed what looked like phlem or something like that in her throat that was about it. I brought in a stool sample and that was looked at. in the end I got deworming and antibiotics. I'm kinda satisified with the medications but I'm just wondering if anyone can throw in their two cents... I've never heard a chondro, or a snake cough... A coughing chondro is most likely a chondro with an RI. I would take her back and have a swab or a lung wash done ASAP and find out which antibiotics will treat her RI. (something like that) I've been given that before for my White Lipped Python when I first got him. Its administered with a needle and I'm used to do that too. But the thing is there isn't any sounds or mucus indicating RI... The phlem... like... thingy... was in her throat, what looks like (to me) saliva... I haven't administered any of the antibiotic yet because she wouldn't hold still and pooped all over me yesterday so I gave up and put her back in her enclosure... From experience, I wouldn't play guessing games with an RI. Is that antibiotic you mentioned Amikacin? If so, you need to follow up with fluids or you run the risk of kidney problems. Please take a look at Greg's site on this. suggested drug regimen You certainly did the right thing taking your chondro into the vet, but a vet that doesn't know much about your animal can be more harm than good. There was a post on the MVF recently about treatments for RIs. You might want to see what others suggested and take this information with you when you see this vet again. I just rememebered I've got the reciept in my bag. I'm not sure, but someone once said that the medication might have updated the names or changed names and that Amikacin might be Amiglyde... I don't know... But I know that Amiglyde was used Antibiotics because I had it for my White lip which had RI, dehydration, mites, and worms when I got him years ago... The medication is the only part about the visit I feel ok about, its the coughing part I'm itchy about... ChondroHead Danny 4.3.1 GTPs and 11 other reptiles... Posts: 470 (02/28/07 11:59:43) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	After reading Greg Maxwell's site, I think Amiglyde and Amikacin are the same thing because that was what the vet told me to keep her hydrated when amiglyde is in use. And I remember that from my WLP too. At the same time the amount to be administrated to my GTP fit the formula given by Mr. Maxwell. ChondroHead Danny 4.3.1 GTPs and 11 other reptiles... You know the old saying about leading a horse to water... The coughing is most likely coming from an RI and you do not know whether you're using medication that will actually help her without doing a resistance test. I wasted time not doing this one time before and lost a chondro because of it. It's worth the time and the money to not lose a snake. An RI can kill quickly. You can't just give up because your chondro doesn't like it. They aren't going to...trust me. Using partial doses or not doing the full regimen leads to drug resistant strains of bacteria which is a detriment to all of us. A bacterial culture and sensitivity test is required to determine if pathenogenic bacteria are present-if so what types-and what antibiotics will kill the bacteria. Specific antibiotics must be used with specific bacteria. Morevover, if the bacteria have mutations or plasmids that have antibiotic resistance genes then the Aminoglycoside-Amikacin-will not work. Here is a link for you. RI case study thread Keeping your animal hydrated through normal means will not cut the mustard when dealing with an Aminoglycoside such as the safest one-Amikacin. This class of antibiotics can fry a reptiles kidneys-and have in the past. Injectable fluids administered daily-fluids with a specific ionic/carbohydrate composition mixed for reptiles-must be given with Amikacin. Water and do it yourself home pedialyte remedies are not a good idea. I have fluids and Amikacin (does not need to be refrigerated) sitting in my refrigerator right now. If one of my animals came down with something I would drive 1 hour to the vet immediately to find out what antibiotics I needed rather than inject what I have in the fridge. Oh, yes, I have more syringes than a heroine addict. I would seek real veterinary care as the care you recieved does not sound adequate to me-as you observed. Furthermore-I would have a better vet show you how to administer the antibiotic injections correctly-perhaps someone can hold the snake when you do so. Crap is to be expected. There is a specific region that is good for injections. Clearly your animal had parasites as well and you might be dealing with a Wild caught chondro. There is no margin for error here. Your animals life is on the line.

And I've also placed another bowl of water out for her on both sides of the tank. But I will ask the vet for other ways to hydrate her. And I will call the vet today for another appointment and for a C/S test. Meg, I didn't really give up... I actually administered the Amiglyde yesterday after I got off work. And I got a kiss from her too... ouch... Dhaisten, Dude... your posts always seem so formal and filled with info, what do you do? Are you a herpo? What do you have in your collection? How did you get to know all that? As for my chondro, I was taught how to administer needles for snakes before so I'm confident about that. The vet I go to was said to be the only "real" vet that knows about snakes, its just that he was not available when I was there. At the same time it was said that he is the only able vet for reptiles locally. As for Snow, she is actually a CB Biak and never had a problem health wise. Her droppings were of notice tho, three nights before, her droppings were muddy and the white part was grainy and eveything pretty lay in a puddle. (clean up sucked...) Snow has been acting normal since she returned from the vet. The only thing I noticed was that she drank water while the lights were on (rare but happens). And she patroled her enclosure like usual last night. Another thing to mention is airborn dust/bacteria. The vet mentioned that as a possibility (?) Snow's enclosure doesn't have anything live in it and has newspaper as bedding. I don't think that was the cause of her coughing. What do you guys think?
