GTP prefers resting on substrate? |

Has anyone else experienced this?
My 2 year old GTP is spending most of the time on the substrate coiled up. Any suggestions as to why this may be happening? |

Occasionally they will hang out on the bottom. Usually it's not for a really long time although I think Greg mentioned in his book that some have done it for about a week or so. As long as it appears to be fine otherwise, figure it's a chondro being a chondro. Keep a close eye on it though.

I've only seen one of my chondro ground himself. He likes to knock down his leafy furniture then realize he isn't hiding in the "trees" anymore so he grounds himself. the other 6 would hang on to thermometer wires before they touch the ground.
 But yea... there shouldn't be a problem when they ground, give them a few days, they'll be back on a perch. Just in case: Check your temps and humidity around your GTP's usual perching area to make sure it wasn't too hot/cold, moist, or whatever that might make him uncomfortable if your GTP stays grounded too long. Or: Check your GTP, maybe he/she is uncomfortable because of a physical problem... (hope not...) If you want: Handle your GTP for a bit and when you put him/her back, put him/her on a branch (this may or may not work) |

Howdy,
In the majority on my experiences, a chondro on the ground could mean the number of things. As mentioned before, I have most often seen this to be a case when the light is too bright in the cage or the plants, whether fake or real, have been moved making the snake feel stressed. That is the main key to a grounded chondro. This behavior is similar to a ball python soaking in a water bowl or a colubrid hiding under the bedding. Usually the animal is stressed about something. Again as suggested, check the humidity, heat, maybe add or rearrange the plants to provide a hide spot, and if you think there is a chance the food you are feeding the snake is too large, GENTLY feel around the vent to see if there is a mass. Laying on the ground helps pass fecal matter as well as a hanging tail. Let us know how everything works out. Nick |

Could be due to several reasons. I have at least one, and sometimes two, at any given time, that likes to spend some time on the ground. At first it used to concern me but now that I'm used to it, it doesn't bother me. They still eat come feeding time. One of my males, that grounds himself from time to time, will take the food off the tongs while he's grounded, etc. It doesn't bother him at all. And now that I'm used to it...it doesn't bother me either! Stu |

I have a juvie that spends a few days on the ground when getting ready to shed - not always, but usually. Maybe it likes the moisture in the moss. It did startle me the first time but now I'm used to it. Here's a photo I dug up in my "lousy pics" file....
