New to the forum and got my 1st chondro |

Hi everyone. Im new to this forum and i just got my first chondro on tuesday the 17th. It is of the sorong local. I just want to varify a few things and see if my set up is sounding good. I did my homework before i got him, but i like to double check with the experts. I got him from exoticjungle.net. Acutally im not sure if its a him or here since its 3 months or so old and unable to be sexed. but i have him in a 15quart sterilite tub. I have 2 perches and I use newspaper for substrate. I have holes drilled into the side for ventilation. My temps are holding at 85-80 and are done with a zoo med uth and an esu thermostate. I have a thermometer in there with a probe so i can get the warm side and cool side temps at once. and it also has a built in thermometer. The day humidity is usually around 80-90% then dries to around 60%, i mist again when i get home from work and take it back up the let it dry to about the 60% range over night. I have a ceramic water dish in with him. I plan on attempting its first feeding next week. He did poop, but i still want to give him 5-7 days to adjust. He coils up on his perches during the day and at night he wonders around his tub. ill post pics here too.

Welcome to the Forum!
What a cute little baby! (you putting him up for sale? I'm no where near an expert, but your setup sounds great. If it happens to be a clear tub, then you might want to put some "shrubbery" in there for your little neo to hide in. Otherwise, I think you're set! Welcome to the addiction! ChondroHead

Haha let me keep him for about 50 years and make sure he is well started then he is yours ^_^
Thanks. I actaully have some leave type things I got at the dollar tree for him that I forgot about till just now. I'll have to go home and wash them real good and put them in with him. |

Welcome to the forum and your new addiction! You may only have one now but just wait...
The set up that you describe sounds good. Seeing the pictures, I would recommend not poking holes in the plasitc container as you have because of the sharp edges. I could see these as a potential place for the snake to hurt itself and it could make replacing the perch difficult. You want to be able to remove the perch and replace the perch without having to handle the baby. You can use a large drill bit to drill a clean hole in the side of the cage to poke the perches through. Just make it a tight fit so they don't roll. If you used the smaller size sterilite cage (around 6qts?), you can just zip tie the plastic hangers together and prop them on the edges on the inside of the container and avoid drilling perch holes. Also, wooden dowels, if that's what you're using, don't hold up well in high humidity and they're difficult to disinfect. Most people use plastic coat hangers for neonates of this age. Beautiful little snake, by the way. I love red neos! |

Im not using the tub anymore. I have it in a sterilite. Ill check the quart size when i get home. I got a smaller dowl rod and i drilled the hole this time. I want quite for the wooden dowl but i need to find something better. maybe hangers but im looking for something better i dont have to cut. There are no sharp edges on this new container. My first attemp (as seen in the pics) was a horror story. It was a rubbermade and didnt hold up well to the requirments of an animal. I find sterilite to hold up very well so i switched to one of those. They dont seem to crack when drilled. I will have to get some new pics up in a few days when it is settled in.

I missed your note at the bottom of the last picture.
One of the hardest things to figure out is how to mount small perches in a larger size rubbermaid-type container. I've found good holders to attach on plastic cages for 1/2" pvc pipes, but not for the coat hanger size. That's one reason I stick with the smaller size container with neos. I move them up into the 12qt size at around a year of age when they can use the 1/2" pvc. I don't think the larger size sterilite you have is too big, I just don't know a good tiny perch attachment solution for them. |

I have found that those PVC end caps will work with any perch and when pop riveted correctly cna make a support for plastic coat hanger perches. All the best, Ross |

When i got this little one, I was told it was of the Sorong Local. I just read somewhere that sorongs are always yellow. would this be true? mine isnt quite red, but orange.

Bodom,
It depends on whether you're talking about a Sorong-type or a chondro that someone is actually claiming as a "locality" Sorong. A Sorong-type could come from a red neonate because they just have the Sorong "look" to them. Very few chondros come in with actual legitimate proof of their locality so that's why you see so many chondros listed as "somethingoranother-type". |
