Hi guys and girls.

This is my first post but have been reading for a while.

Just a few question of advice as i am seriously considering the purchase of a Green tree python.

1. My job sometimes requires me to go away from Monday to Friday. I realise I could use a misting system on a timer to ensure humidity, however would I be better waiting until im employed in a job (if ever), where I could guarentee being at home all week?

2. Is it possible to put a neonate in small deorative enclosure like a small exo-terra ? Or is it plastic tubs all the way.

I have sent for 'The more complete chondro' but any extra advice will be much appreciated.

Please be as harsh as neccesary, I would not like the animal to suffer by me being away from home to often.

Hi, welcome (officially now) to the forum!
When i had my first chondro, I was in the Navy. We go out to sea for weeks long periods, and sometimes longer. My chondros were fine as long as you feed them properly before you leave, and are able to leave enough water/misting before you leave. But if you plan on going out more than a week, I recommend a sitter. I've tried two weeks before but that usually ends up in dried up water bowls and a really bad sheds. So I'd get a sitter. When we went to the middle east, I had a friend who watched them for me (six months is a long time no matter what kind of water bowl you put in there :)
As for decorative enclosures or tubs, it is up to you. Decorative enclosures like Exoterra isn't able to hold humidity unless you constantly spray it, fill it with water, or modifiy it. You'd really have to look for ones that do and they cost a lot when a $5 plastic tub can do. Tubs are cheap, easy to clean, and holds humidity well (when properly set up). Just wait till you get The More Complete Chondro, its got everything! So, do you have any other reptiles or pets?

I kept easy species such as Garter and Corn snakes a few years back.

I have successfully been keeping Marine fish and Corals for the last few years, ironically I think these have probably prepared me for the commitment and workload of Chondros rather than the Snakes.

Welcome to the forum!

Do you go out of town for a week at a time very often? If it's not too often, I don't think it would inhibit you from owning these awesome snakes. I would probably recommend at least a yearling since neonates require more frequent cleaning and humidity. I keep my neonates humid 99% of the time and they go to the bathroom every few days. Do you know someone who could come by once during your time away to check in on a chondro while you're away? The biggest downside I see to being away for long periods of time on a frequent basis is not knowing when there's a health issue until it's too late.

As I mentioned before, I really would steer away from a neonate until you can be home on a more regular basis. You can put a yearling or older subadult chondro into a decorated enclosure. In fact, the mulch substrate holds the humidity for longer than paper towels. Don't go with an enclosure with a vent or screened top because heat and humidity will escape too easily. I would make my own enclosure or purchase one rather than trying to retrofit an exoterra, but that's my opinion. There are lots of great chondro cages made out there that aren't too expensive.

I agree with KimBurge and Dphhchondro, The glass/screen top cages should be avoided. I know I OWN the EXO-Terra and it is a real pain, I had to block off most of the screen top to hold the moisture. It took weeks to get it right, my GTP was probably 8 months old and did not like the adjusting process. I did get it right though and the cage does look awesome... Just not a good way to start... Go with the plastic tub... it is not pretty but it sure gets the job done. :) Take the time to read the book before you make a commitment to these guys... It will defiantly come in handy...

It has to be misted 3 times a day to keep good moisture in the cage, (no the windex in the picture is not used to clean the cage)
Under the mulch is potting soil that i baked in the oven to kill anything that was living in it, that is the key that i found to help keep in the moisture, there is about an inch and a half of it in there, then a inch of mulch.
Most of the screen on top has been blocked off, unfortunately since their is soo much moisture in the cage now what is left of the screen is starting to rust: Like i said, it does make a good looking cage just not a piratical cage, at least not a good first cage.
