But how about Manokwari and specifically the newly discovered Mamberamo locality. To me, the latter just seems to be a another variant of the Yayapura (named after the township and region which is located closeby). What are your views on this? I can post a photo if need be... cheers Graham

Can you show us a picture? We really don't know enough about home ranges of chondros in the wild to guess at how much migration or movement there is. I don't know enough about the terrain to know what barriers (or lack of barries) would influence movement. I guess I'm a "lumper" when it comes to locality types and the importers out there seem to be determined to "split" and create NEW (and improved or "rare") localities so they can make a sale. It seems they are finding specimens there (in Mamberamo) that differ from other specimens. I can't really tell the differences, but it seems this new locality is authentic because of its geographical segregation within the region. The whole Mamberamo region was unaccessible to the general public, until only just recently. It is the same region where you still have all these 'uncontacted' peoples who have never been in contact with the outside world. Sounds plausible to me...the Bokondini locale occurs to the south of the Mamberamo reserve, in the foothills leading up to the higher mountain range in the south. The Mamberamo region is primarily a large elongated river basin, is immense and extends from the North of Papua to the central mountain ranges in the south. This specimen was found near the river estuary at the nothern most point of Mamberamo where the river flows into the Pacific.

While somewhat geographincally isolated, it sure looks like a Jayapura to me. At first glace it seems like another "rare" locality name to drum up sales. I'd be interested to see more though. Tough to form an opinion a based on one pic of one animal.

Did you see it offered as for sale than? This picture is made by a respected guide. I asked him to do when he is on trekking and see some gtp,s. All those book readings know how of loc,s. This area is hundreds of miles from Jayapura. Look first on the map,before you write something. More close to Yapen than Jayapura. Shall we call it Yapen than? Btw i was there 8 years ago myself in mamberamo area. Better than books or pc. OC

It seems that some names seem to be picked randomly from a map. To be clear, I didn't say anything about that particular animal being for sale or discredit where it was photgraphed. I enjoy seeing the pictures that you post. Very few folks have been to the places you've gone or have close contacts with others who know the area so well. Because of this, I would never question the authenticity of the animal or, again, where it was photgraphed. I'm merely saying that looking at the picture that's posted, the animal appears similar to a Jayapura locale-type. The most similar trait being the pronounced blue dorsal marking. And OC, in my view it was not Jon's intention to suggest that. OC has very extensive experience "in the field" at those locations, so I have no reason to believe that the claims are wrong. We need more specimens to be collected before that can be confirmed, but the chances are that this is indeed an authentic new locality due to the fact that this region has only been explored just recently...at the least another variant of the Jayapura (which it resembles, in my view). To call it a Yapen variant would be wrong in my view because Yapen is an island to the West of Samberamo. Graham P. Oxtoby
